New Hamburg Board of Trade Executive Meeting

July 9, 2008

Present: Paul Knowles, Tim Bender, Nigel Gordijk, Tom Hinz, Larry Zehr, Terry McIntosh, Dave Seyler and Audrey Cook. Regrets: Ed Lemont, Lynn Mackie, and Doug Brenneman

Motion to approve minutes of previous meeting, Dave, second Larry.

There was no financial report.

Canada Day Duck Race: Tim reported that it was certainly well attended with the good weather. Most of the duck tickets were sold (in fact most on the day of the race), and some are still outstanding. After prizes and expenses we should net over $4,000. The Canada Day wrap-up meeting will be held soon and Tim asked for any comments the executive wished him to pass on to the committee. Dave noted that he had comments from some neighbors that they would like to see more children's activities.

The food booth will be run as usual during sidewalk sale days and cruise night but we are in need of volunteers. It is felt that the local businesses will give us help during the day but we do need a "person in charge" for each day.

Paul gave a brief update on the golf tournament. The final figures have not yet been tallied but there should be a profit of $14,500. The volunteers worked hard leading up to the event as well as on the day itself. Nigel asked for photos to be put on our website. The 2009 golf day is June 15.

Dave gave waterwheel update. It stops periodically for no apparent reason, sometimes starting again on it's own and at other times needing help. It will be monitored.

Garbage cans: All heritage garbage cans are damaged and repairs can be upwards of $8,000. A discussion on whose responsibility it is for garbage in the downtown area. Our cans would only hold enough garbage for one day in this busy area and garbage is collected once a week. This is simply not an efficient way to keep New Hamburg clean. Dave and Paul will meet with Township representatives and will also talk to Kevin Cressman @ Cressridge to find the exact cost of replacement or repair.

150th Anniversary event: New Hamburg Board of Trade is sponsoring the entire event. The Independent will be doing a special edition and posters will soon be appearing throughout the downtown area. A logo has been designed as well as a postage stamp. Along with the parade there will be buskers and artisans as well as Native Canadian Presentations. Butter and ice cream churning competitions will also be held. A big part of our heritage that day will be high-lighted by Doors Open.

New Business: The Quidditch Tournament had to be cancelled, as the numbers for pre-registration just did not come in. Everyone agreed that the organizers were right to call off the event and felt they needed a big thank-you for their efforts.

Highway 7 & 8. A total of 10 corridors are being looked at to by-pass New Hamburg en route to Stratford and London. Motion by Dave, second Tom to voice our concerns to the Ministry of Transportation on any by-pass of New Hamburg.

Meeting adjourned.

Next executive meeting, Aug. 13 @ 6:30.
